Iran’s war threatens to cause a “self-inflicted global recession”, warns the president of the republic Alexander Stubb online magazine In an interview with Politico. The economic consequences of a recession can be more serious than the coronavirus pandemic, Stubb says, referring to the assessment of his trusted expert, according to the magazine.
“This shows what happens when you act outside the international rules and norms,” states Stubb, referring to the actions of the United States.
According to Stubb, the war has already shown how connected the countries and production chains of the whole world are to each other in the energy market and geopolitics.
“Everything is connected to everything: the price of oil to the price of gas, the price of food, the price of fertilizers, the price of medicine, the list goes on.”
Because of this, the President of the United States Donald Trump’s Stubb believes that the administration’s “transactional” or barter-based approach to foreign policy does not work.
“We are all connected, if not otherwise, then at the gas pump.”
World War III?
There are several serious conflicts going on, but Stubb tells Politico that he doesn’t want to talk about the start of World War III — “yet.”
“Talking about the Third World War is a big thing, maybe too big for the human mind to understand the development of international relations at this stage,” says Stubb.
“Now we see an escalation [paikallisista] to regional wars. We must constantly work to calm the wars and ensure that these wars do not spread further.”
As Stubb has said elsewhere in public, he estimates that Ukraine’s negotiation process is now at a standstill. US attention is on Iran.
According to Stubb, there is no reason for European countries to get involved in the Iran war as long as the fighting continues. According to Stubb, Europe can discuss participation in peacekeeping.
“This may sound harsh, but Iran is not my war. Ukraine is,” says Stubb, referring to Trump’s Ukraine policies from a European point of view.
