The Swedish Climate Policy Council’s new report warns that the price of diesel in our neighborhood may rise to 2.7 euros per liter in order to meet the country’s climate goals. Accordingly, the price of gasoline threatens to rise to around 2.3 euros per liter.
Behind the price pressure is the Swedish government’s previous decision to reduce the distribution obligation. Also In Finland, there have been strong discussions around the distribution obligation in recent years, so different event costs should be taken into account.
A decrease in the distribution obligation would increase the tax revenue received by the state, but would cripple compliance with the climate goals. The latter can lead to a large decrease in the state coffers for all consumers. The situation is both challenging and complex, and there is no clear winning solution in sight.
The price fell, the emissions rose
The decision made in Sweden reduced the price of gasoline by almost ten cents and the price of diesel by about forty cents per liter, but at the same time traffic emissions increased strongly.
The Climate Policy Council strongly criticizes the Swedish government, because according to the report, current developments endanger the achievement of climate goals and may require significantly more expensive measures to cut emissions in the future.
According to the report’s proposal, the share of fossil-free fuels must be increased after the next election. On the other hand, if emissions are reduced only by increasing the distribution obligation, fuel prices may rise by more than fifty cents per liter.
At current fuel prices, this would mean the price of gasoline is almost 2.3 euros per liter, and the price of diesel is about 2.7 euros per liter.
Sweden’s current low fuel prices according to the report, they also create pressure on neighboring countries, where citizens may demand that prices be lowered to Sweden’s level. In Finland, the first consternation has already been seen.
However, the price shock is avoidable if the lifting of the distribution obligation is combined with other measures. As one solution, the report points to direct compensations for those households that will be hit hardest by the price increase.
Support models like this have already been introduced in Germany, Austria and Canada, among others, with news on the matter We Car Owners according to the magazine.
