Pay television lost 4.7 million customers in 5 years

Pay television in Mexico continues with losses, registering 15.1 million subscriptions in the fourth quarter of 2025, which represented an annual drop of 9.3 percent, according to an analysis by The Competitive Intelligence Unit, a consultancy specialized in telecommunications.

“The market has gone from 19.8 million subscriptions at the end of 2020 to the current level of 15.1 million, a reduction of close to 5 million or almost a quarter less,” he stated in his study, which details: 46 percent canceled their subscription and, of that group, only 9.6 percent would consider contracting again.

The high cost of the service remains the main cause of cancellation (37 percent), followed by lack of affinity with the programming (27 percent).

The consultancy explained that the reasons behind the cancellation focus on economic factors and a loss of perceived value.

“The consolidation of a downward trend is confirmed, which has progressively accentuated in recent quarters, which shows an irreversible change in market dynamics. The contraction is not only sustained, but also widespread among operators. Virtually all players, cable and satellite, are registering subscriber losses, with the exception of those that have managed to partially cushion the fall through attractive service bundling strategies,” he mentioned.

The accumulated reduction confirms the exhaustion of the model. Televisa is the leading pay television provider with a market share of 57.4 percent and the second fixed broadband operator, with a share of 21 percent.
