Europe will ban calling vegan products steak or bacon

The European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture voted to support an agreement on targeted amendments to EU rules on the common organization of agricultural markets, reached during negotiations between the European Parliament, the Council of the EU and the European Commission.

The changes concern primarily contractual relations and are aimed at strengthening the position of farmers in the supply chain.

In addition, the agreement provides for a ban on the use of 31 terms for in the names of vegan products. According to the bill, “chop”, “wings”, “bacon”, “steak”, “chop”, “knuckle”, etc. cannot be vegan, hybrid or cultivated.

At the same time, terms such as “sausage”, “burger” or “nuggets” were not banned.

Manufacturers are given a three-year transition period to adapt and rebrand.
