Court allows Israeli companies to use Rubik’s Cube in their logos

The Tel Aviv District Court dismissed a lawsuit filed by Seven Towns, which owns the Rubik’s Cube brand, to ban the use of the three-dimensional image of the cube in logos.

Judge Gershon Gontovnik dismissed the suit, ruling that the cube is a universal basic figure whose use must remain free to the public. According to the ruling, the plaintiff failed to prove that the three-dimensional image of the cube is unambiguously associated by Israelis with the corresponding brand.

Thus, the image of the Rubik’s Cube can be used in logos, provided that the name “Rubik’s Cube” or “Hungarian Cube” is not used.

Seven Towns has been charged with legal costs of 20,000 shekels.
