Volkswagen wants to build an electric car costing 20,000 euros from 2027

The German car company Volkswagen, which also includes Audi, Seat and Skoda, has given the green light for an entry-level model in its range of electric cars. The world premiere is planned for 2027 and the price tag of the car will be around 20,000 euros. The car manufacturer announced this on Tuesday after a board meeting.

Volkswagen has not yet named a specific production location for the car, but the entry-level model will be built in Europe. “We are thus making a clear commitment to industrial production in Europe,” said group CEO Oliver Blume. “It is an entry level for electric mobility from Europe for Europe.”

“For electromobility to become widespread, attractive vehicles are needed, starting from the entry-level segment,” said CEO of Volkswagen’s core brand Thomas Schäfer.

Volkswagen subsidiary Audi also has a factory in Brussels, where the Audi Q8 e-tron, a large electric SUV, is today built. The successor to that model will no longer be built by Audi Brussels after 2027. Because there has been uncertainty about the future of the Brussels factory for some time, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Open VLD) has set up an Audi task force. Flemish Minister of Economy Jo Brouns (CD&V) is working on a list of possible support measures that Flanders can take in the Audi Brussels file. These measures are then submitted and bundled within the task force.
