Elon Musk bans iPhones for employees after deal between Apple and OpenAI

Elon Musk bans the use of iPhones by employees of his companies if those Apple smartphones use OpenAI’s AI chatbot ChatGPT. Musk sees this as a major safety risk, he reports on Twitter.

Apple on Monday announced a partnership with artificial intelligence company OpenAI, giving Apple users access to ChatGPT through digital assistant Siri. This should become possible later this year with Apple’s new iOS 18 operating system.

But Musk then threatens to ban Apple devices at his companies, including X, car maker Tesla and space company SpaceX. Musk also has his own AI company xAI. He speaks of an unacceptable security risk and says that Apple has no idea what happens to information that comes into the hands of OpenAI. According to Musk, visitors will then have to hand in their Apple devices for safe storage.
