Trains on strike, Sunday of chaos and inconvenience for travellers

It was a Sunday of delays, cancellations and inconveniences on a large part of the railway network due to the national strike of Trenitalia, Trenitalia Tper and Trenord staff which ended at 2am on Monday. Since it was a public holiday, there were no guarantee bands and this increased the problems caused by the abstention from work of the PDM/PDB National Assembly (engine personnel and on-board personnel), even for those traveling on high speed trains. However, Italo’s connections are regular.

Trenord reported that only “20% of trains ran regularly”. In Lombardy, many trains were canceled on all routes, including Regional and High Speed, due to the strike in which Uiltrasporti and Orsa joined, and delays exceeded 80 minutes. Dozens of trains departing and arriving at Rome’s Termini station – both regional and high speed – have been cancelled.

Others traveled with delays of more than 30 minutes. Starting from Saturday, Trenitalia has sent over 75 thousand text messages and emails to inform passengers in advance about the possible inconveniences of the strike. The call center handled an average of 1,500 calls per hour: almost triple that of an ordinary Sunday. There has also been an increase in assistance at the main stations to guarantee assistance to those in need of information. In Campania the on-board staff of regional railway transport went on strike: the regional unions of Filt Cgil, Fit Cisl, Uiltrasporti, Ugl Ferrovieri, Fast and Orsa proclaimed a 23-hour abstention from work to “demand better working conditions” for the Trenitalia Dbr Campania Crew Staff.
