EU and Ukraine signed security commitments

On Thursday in Brussels, the European Union gave Ukraine a long term security commitments.

The purpose of the agreement is to help Ukraine defend itself, counter destabilization efforts and prevent future attacks.

The text promises Ukraine economic, military and industrial support, among other things. Ukraine is also supported in energy transition and nuclear power safety.

The parties agree to share intelligence and satellite images with each other.

The European Union and its member states promise to speed up and enhance the delivery of all necessary military aid.

The annual budget of the Ukraine aid fund within the European Peace Fund for this year is five billion euros. The agreement states that additional annual investments can be planned until 2027.

The additional capitalization takes into account the needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the political guidance of the Council of Member States.

The European Union promises to continue providing training to the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

The text of the agreement states that EU enlargement is a “geostrategic investment” in peace and security. The European Union will continue to support Ukraine in its membership efforts.

Ukraine undertakes to intensify its reform work, especially in the field of strengthening the rule of law.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi stated when he arrived at the meeting that he was satisfied that the membership negotiations between the EU and Ukraine have finally been opened.

He stated that he was also grateful for the recent decision of the G7 countries regarding the frozen Russian funds. The countries agreed that the proceeds of the frozen funds can be used to repay the 50 billion loan taken out to support the war in Ukraine.

Zelenskyi said he was concerned that sanctions on Russian oligarchs would be loosened.

“That’s what I want to discuss today. I also want to discuss the preparations for the next peace summit. It is an important matter not only for Ukraine, but also for the rest of the world.”
