By optimizing the air source heat pumps, electricity was saved by 23% – “We were surprised that there was so much savings”

Many companies focus on the intelligent control of home heating with the aim of saving energy and money. Now the Swedish company has analyzed how much savings can actually be achieved.

Analysis of actual savings

Together, Ngenic is a Swedish energy company Godelanalyzed how much energy the system actually saves.

The calculation has been made for 41 villas. For all these sites, Godel had detailed hourly data available before and after the installation of the control system.

According to the results, these 41 households reduced their energy use by a total of 120,085 kilowatt hours when comparing the winter of 2022–2023 to the winter of 2021–2022.

According to the analysis, this corresponds to a saving of 23 percent.

In the winter of 2022–2023, each household saved an average of almost 3,000 kilowatt hours.

“We think it’s very good. We were surprised that there was so much savings,” says Ngenic CEO Björn Berg to Ny Teknik.

He estimates that a reduction of 3,000 kilowatt hours corresponds to an average saving of 8,000 kroner, or about 700 euros.

The Finnish Kapacity.io promises annual savings of 300–500 euros on average. Their software can be used in almost all geothermal, air water and air heat pumps with wifi. The price of the service is 4–8 euros per month.

Ngenic’s system

The system called Ngenic Tune costs 4,490 kroner (about 400 euros). Therefore, you can get good savings from the system already in the first year of use.

At the customer’s home, Ngenic’s control system consists of three different modules.

A control unit is installed between the outdoor sensor and the heat pump, and a battery-powered sensor is installed indoors, which collects information about temperature, solar radiation and humidity. A communication unit is placed in the customer’s internet router, which manages the communication between the local units and Ngenic’s central system.

The system uses machine learning to optimize consumption.
