Controversy grows in Spain over mass tourism

The Andalusian cities of Malaga and Cadiz joined in with two massive demonstrations to support the growing discontent over mass tourism and its negative effects on the housing market, generated precisely by the uncontrolled influx of travellers. This type of collective gesture of rejection was recently expressed in other parts of Spain, such as in the capital of the Balearic Islands, Palma de Mallorca, and in several of the Canary Islands. Tourism is one of the driving forces of the Spanish economy, representing nearly 13 percent of the gross domestic product.
