Wind power will grow to become the largest form of renewable electricity production this year

The construction of wind power continues briskly, and this year it is predicted to grow into the largest form of renewable energy in Finland, it turns out Wind power association from half-yearly statistics.

According to Statistics Finland, hydropower was the most used form of renewable electricity production last year, and its share was 18.8 percent. Wind power covered 18.1 percent of all electricity consumption in Finland.

By the end of June, 1,660 wind turbines were operating in Finland, of which 60 have been commissioned this year. The power plants already in use produce more than 7,000 megawatts of energy. When the power plants completed during the rest of the year are included, wind power will produce 8,000 megawatts of energy.

“Next year will also show [tuulivoiman] in terms of construction, good. Similarly, based on the network connection agreements made in the following years. However, the current high interest rate and construction costs are delaying new investment decisions, as well as the delay of new investments that consume a lot of electricity,” says the CEO of the Finnish Wind Energy Association Anni Mikkonen in the bulletin.

More than half of Finnish wind turbines are located in Ostrobothnia. This year, however, wind power has also been actively built in Central Finland and Satakunta. Mikkonen also highlights Eastern Finland’s opportunities for building wind power.

“The recently published working group report on wind power in Eastern Finland shows that investing wind power in the eastern parts of the country is not easy or cheap, but it is possible. It must be understood that strengthening the vitality of Eastern Finland with the help of large investments will bring many good things in the long run,” says Mikkonen.
