Finland’s ranking clearly weakened in the international competitiveness comparison

Finland has fallen four places down to 15th place in the international competitiveness comparison of the Swiss IMD Institute. This is reported by the Research Institute for Business Etla.

Singapore, Switzerland and Denmark are at the top of the comparison. Sweden ranked sixth and Norway tenth in the comparison.

Finland’s ranking was particularly depressed by weak economic success, in which category Finland fell to 50th place. Finland’s ranking improved only in international trade, but in all the other 18 areas of the comparison, Finland’s ranking weakened from last year.

Finland’s ranking in the IMD comparison continued to decrease, as in 2022 Finland ranked eighth in the comparison.

IMD:n the competitiveness index measures how countries and companies as a whole utilize their abilities to achieve wealth or profits.

The main entities in the index are economic success, public administration efficiency, business performance and infrastructure. Each of these main entities is divided into five sub-areas.

In the comparison of economic success, Finland’s ranking was weighed down by the country’s weaker economic situation than other countries last year, when gross domestic product, investments and the unemployment rate developed weakly.

“Finland’s economy has been weighed down more than average by the impact of the rise in interest rates on investments and consumption and the impact of the Russian war of aggression on Finland’s exports of goods and services. These cyclical factors are expected to start to improve, which would support Finland’s ranking in the next few years,” Kaitila estimates.
