Expectations of a breakthrough from Quang Tri Airport
On the afternoon of July 6, Quang Tri province and the T&T-Cienco 4 joint venture will start the Quang Tri Airport construction investment project, with a total investment of more than 5,800 billion VND. This is the second airport in Vietnam invested in the public-private partnership (PPP) model, after Van Don Airport (Quang Ninh).

The project was approved by the Prime Minister for investment and construction under the public-private partnership (PPP) method in Decision No. 2148 dated December 20, 2021 and the Feasibility Study Report was approved by the People’s Committee of Quang Tri province in August 2023.

The project is located in Gio Quang, Gio Hai and Gio Mai communes (Gio Linh district) with the scale of a level 4C civil airport and a level II military airport, meeting the needs of up to 5 million passengers per year and 25,500 tons of cargo per year.

According to the Master Plan for the development of the national airport system for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050 approved by the Prime Minister, Quang Tri Airport is identified as one of 16 domestic airports for the 2021-2030 period and one of 19 domestic airports with a vision to 2050.

Quang Tri with its long coastline, famous landscapes, important revolutionary historical relics associated with wars in the nation’s history such as Truong Son National Martyrs’ Cemetery, Road 9 National Martyrs’ Cemetery, Quang Tri Ancient Citadel, Hien Luong – Ben Hai Historical Relics, etc. The project investor predicts that when the airport is built, the number of visitors from both ends of the country will flock to visit the old battlefields and visit relics associated with the nation’s history.

“When put into operation, Quang Tri airport will help shorten the travel time to the locality for tourists,” said the joint venture representative. Tourists coming to Quang Tri by air will not need to take an intermediate flight to Phu Bai airport (Hue) or Dong Hoi airport (Quang Binh), then continue to travel by road as before.

In the Quang Tri Provincial Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, the goal is set for Quang Tri to reach a development level among the country’s fairly developed provinces and have a basic economic structure of an industrial – service province; striving to turn the province into one of the comprehensive economic centers of the North Central and Central Coast regions, a logistics and freight transit center of Southeast Asia and transport corridors in the ASEAN region, the Mekong sub-region. Quang Tri also aims to develop all 5 types of transportation: road, rail, waterway, sea and air.

According to Mr. Vo Van Hung, Chairman of Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee, Quang Tri Airport is an important driving force project to implement the strategic goals of socio-economic development and national defense and security. The project not only transports passengers but also combines goods and logistics, serving the development of industrial parks, economic zones, commercial services, airport urban areas… creating opportunities to attract domestic and international investors to invest, contributing to the development of a rich and beautiful Quang Tri.

Along with projects such as Cam Lo-La Son Expressway, National Highway 15D, the Trans-Asia Highway connecting Laos-Thailand, the coastal road project connecting the East-West Economic Corridor, Lao Bao-Cam Lo Expressway, My Thuy deep-water port, My Thuy-Dong Ha-Lao Bao railway…, Quang Tri Airport is considered an important piece to complete the province’s synchronous transportation network, creating momentum and opportunities for Quang Tri to accelerate and break through.

“With its unique role, favorable geographical location, and determination to invest in connecting synchronous and modern transport infrastructure, opportunities for sustainable and beautiful development are present every day in the locality,” Mr. Hung emphasized.

According to the leaders of Quang Tri province, the airport project not only has the meaning of promoting local socio-economic development, but more importantly, the project also realizes the lifelong aspiration of the people of Quang Tri to shorten the North-South journey, helping local people and families with relatives and comrades who fought and sacrificed on the Quang Tri battlefield; and international friends to come to the land and people of Quang Tri conveniently and quickly.

“The construction of Quang Tri Airport is the aspiration of the people of Quang Tri and a great ambition that demonstrates the province’s rise,” said the Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee, adding that it is also the wish of the central ministries, branches, and leaders of the Party and State whenever they visit and work with Quang Tri – a land with many revolutionary historical relics, including 72 martyrs’ cemeteries.

In addition, the project also demonstrates the province’s determination to better meet the needs of connecting localities, regions and international friends to serve all-round development.

Mr. Bui Doan Ne, Vice President of the Association and General Secretary of the Vietnam Aviation Business Association (VABA), acknowledged that the geographical location of Quang Tri province currently connects the province with other regions of the country mainly by rail, road and sea. This causes time waste when partners come to invest, reduces the attractiveness of tourism strengths and competitiveness in the fields.

Therefore, according to Mr. Ne, the project will realize the goal of “opening the sky”, creating favorable conditions for domestic and foreign tourists to pay tribute to the heroic land. In addition, investors come to Quang Tri to study investment in resorts, economic zones, and increase trade between localities in the region through the East-West Economic Corridor, the shortest trans-Asian route connecting countries in the region from Myanmar-Thailand-Laos through the Lao Bao international border gate to Central Vietnam and expanding to the ASEAN region.

As the project investor, Mr. Do Quang Hien, Founder and Chairman of the Strategy Committee of T&T Group, shared that the Group devotes a lot of enthusiasm to the sacred land of Quang Tri.

Along with other large-scale projects on energy, infrastructure, and real estate being invested in, T&T Group is determined to stick together, accompany, and help Quang Tri’s socio-economic “take off”.
