France’s Marine Le Pen is suspected of illegal financing

Marine Le Pen, the leader of the French far-right, is suspected of illegally financing her election campaign in the 2022 presidential elections. The authorities started an investigation into the suspected crime on July 2.

The news agency reported on the matter, among others AP.

According to AP, the focus of the investigation are those suspected of forgery and fraud.

In France, the amount of campaign funding used for elections is limited. The matter is overseen, among other things, by the commission dealing with campaign accounts and political financing.

So far, Le Pen has not commented on the criminal suspicion.

Le Pen’s National Coalition suffered a surprise defeat in the French election over the weekend, winning far fewer MP seats than expected.
