Vietnam | Caviar exports increased more than 84 times

Exported at nearly half a million VND per kilogram, in the first 5 months of the year, caviar export turnover increased dramatically by nearly 84 times.

Figures from the General Department of Customs show that caviar exports in the first months of the year grew dramatically.

In May, Vietnamese enterprises exported about 316 tons of caviar, earning 5.3 million USD. Compared to the same period last year, caviar exports increased dramatically by 6,110% in value.

The reason is that the average export price of caviar increased by nearly 567% compared to the same month in 2023, at 16.7 USD per kg (equivalent to 417,000 VND). This is the highest price among the export products of the seafood industry at the beginning of this year. Currently, salmon has the second highest price, at 10.3 USD per kg. Meanwhile, crabs and swimming crabs are being sold abroad at 9 USD per kg.

In the first five months of the year, domestic enterprises exported 1,336 tons of caviar, earning 22.2 million USD. Compared to the same period last year, caviar exports increased by 1,362% in volume and 8,395% in value.

Last year, nearly 4,000 tons of this item were exported, earning 65.8 million USD. This number decreased by about 5.5% in volume but increased slightly by 3.7% in value compared to 2022.

According to customs statistics, after a sharp decline in 2023, seafood exports have improved in the first months of this year, recording positive growth. By the end of June, exports of this group of products earned 4.4 billion USD, a slight increase of 6.2% over the same period last year.

In terms of products, by the end of May, shrimp and pangasius still accounted for a large proportion, about 53% of the total export turnover of the whole industry. Specifically, shrimp exports reached nearly 1.18 billion USD, pangasius over 707 million USD. Compared to the same period last year, the export value of shrimp and pangasius increased slightly, respectively 8.1% and 3.6%.

Apart from shrimp and tra fish, the export value of most other items increased slightly, some items even recorded negative growth such as mackerel, dried fish, and squid.
