Hundreds of thousands of people in Lao Cai, Cao Bang, Bac Kan lost power.

The electricity sector proactively cut off power to some areas in Lao Cai, Cao Bang, and Bac Kan when floodwaters rose due to the circulation after storm Yagi, causing hundreds of thousands of people to lose power.

On the morning of September 9, due to the impact of the circulation after Typhoon Yagi, many northern mountainous provinces experienced heavy rain and severe flooding. Vietnam Electricity (EVN) said that some power companies had to proactively stop supplying electricity to prevent incidents and ensure safety.

In Lao CaiBy 10am, the power company had cut off over 600 low-voltage transformer stations, equivalent to more than 100,000 customers losing power. Currently, Lao Cai Power Company is mobilizing maximum manpower to overcome the consequences caused by the storm.

Approximately 13,650 customers in Cao Bang power outage. In particular, Nguyen Binh and Bao Lac districts were isolated by floods and lost phone signals. Power supply to the drainage pumping stations in this province was still maintained.

In Bac Kan many low voltage power poles were eroded, broken, and fell. Ba Be District Electricity was forced to stop supplying power to 18 transformer stations, affecting 2,540 customers.

Previously, due to the impact of Typhoon Yagi, the power system was paralyzed on a large scale. Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Hai Duong, and Hanoi suffered power outages due to problems with 5 500kV lines, 31 220kV lines, and 97 110kV lines. According to the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC), more than 5.7 million customers had their power cut due to the storm.

On September 9, two days after the storm, about 4.2 million customers (equivalent to nearly 74%) had their power restored. Currently, more than 110,000 customers in Quang Ninh have electricity back, equivalent to 24%. Quang Ninh Electricity said that today they will restore power to priority customers in Ha Long city. The remaining areas, due to many broken power poles, are expected to be restored in the next few days.

In Hanoi, 290,000 customers were affected by Typhoon Yagi, mostly in suburban districts. To date, nearly 100% of these customers have had their power restored.

Similarly, Thanh Hoa has completed the repair and restored power to all residents in the area. Previously, 18 medium-voltage lines had problems, 10 low-voltage poles were broken and 5 poles were tilted due to the storm. The problem affected 68,000 customers.

About 4,000 employees of the power company participated in overcoming the consequences and restoring power after the storm. In addition, 413 officers and technical workers from 13 affiliated units were mobilized to support handling power grid incidents in Quang Ninh and Hai Phong.

According to EVN, hydropower plants in the northern region are operating normally, and water flow to hydropower reservoirs has increased due to the impact of storms and rains. Some hydropower reservoirs are opening their sluice gates to regulate water flow. Specifically, Lai Chau opened 1 sluice gate; Hoa Binh and Thac Ba opened 2 sluice gates. Tuyen Quang, Ban Chat and Huoi Quang plants opened 4 sluice gates; Trung Son and Ban Ve opened 6 sluice gates, respectively. In addition, the electricity sector has restored 70-75% of the damaged high-voltage lines.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, due to the influence of the circulation after Typhoon Yagi, many northern mountainous provinces are experiencing heavy rain from 7pm yesterday to 3am today. The rainfall in An Phu (Yen Bai) is 256mm, Gia Phu (Lao Cai) is nearly 160mm, Nam Dan (Ha Giang) is 153mm, Yen Do (Thai Nguyen) is 220mm. Heavy rain has caused severe flooding and landslides in many localities, affecting people’s lives as well as the relief and rescue work of functional forces.
