In Lyon, you can now virtually visit the “fish bones”, a mysterious network of galleries

It is one of the greatest mysteries of Lyon: the fish bones. For decades, this vast network of two kilometers of ancient galleries, 2000 years old, located under the Croix-Rousse hill and rediscovered by chance in the 1960s, has fascinated the inhabitants. Closed to the public for more than forty years for security reasons, the fish bones can be visited again… virtually, starting this Friday.

The city of Lyon is inaugurating an immersive route that allows you to explore the famous galleries as if we were there. The visit lasts 40 minutes and required an investment of 250,000 euros as part of the participatory budget. It is embellished with points of interest that allow you to learn more about this incredible ancient work.

“No equivalent in the world”

“It’s a place that has no equivalent in the world,” recalls Sylvain Godinot, the deputy for heritage in the city of Lyon (Rhône). 20 m underground, the site is organized around a central gallery that acts as a backbone with 32 lateral galleries in the shape of… fish bones. On the walls, visitors can observe Roman graffiti (more than 230 inscriptions). “We date this network from the Augustan era,” specifies the elected official.
