‘David et Jonathas’ by Charpentier at the Teatro Real

The Orchestra and Choir of Ensemble Correspondancess with musical direction by Sebastien Daucé, They present a French Baroque opera in a concert version at the Teatro Real Marc-Antoine Charpentier based on a biblical episode: David young warrior who has defeated the giant Goliath has fallen in love with Jonathan son of the king Saul who will succeed to the throne of Israel after the death of his lover. The story is told confusingly, because The musician does not seem to be very interested in anything he deals with, but rather in embodying beautiful music in the great themes he has covered.from war to passionate love, through stormy magic and pastoral delight.

The interpretation of Daucé, his musicians, singers and choir is impeccable, as is usually the case with this type of ensemble that makes specialization in a type of repertoire a masterful exercise, in the double sense of the term: His splendid interpretation serves forgotten titles that the masters make known, The modality of the concert, in this case of Spartan sobriety, serves the chosen work well, without missing the display of images typical of a staging.

It is worth noting that some details could have been taken care of: the role of Yonatán, entrusted to a soprano, is misleading when he appears in a markedly feminine outfit. Due to the confusion of the script, which is scattered among secondary figures, it takes a while to know who Yonatán is (some viewer confused the pretty girl Gwendoline Blondeelexcellent singer, with an alleged wife of the imminent King David).

It is also worth asking the Teatro Real again for greater care in the programs of operas in concert.now that they cover half of their programming. The slightly neglected leaves do not contain information that the viewer would appreciate, such as, for example, what would be the original tessitura required of the performers, who here are distributed according to a later convention (baritone, tenor, soprano).

The public thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful incomprehensible piece; Its performers achieved the feat of creating a climate of extremely pleasant musical serenity, the music above, or below, around the poor humans struggling with lukewarm hopes, clinging to unattainable illusions.
