“The Big Game” by Richard Powers: The Great Master Plan

No wonder so many consider Richard Powers to be one of America’s greatest authors. You can read his new novel “The Big Game” in awe because of its sheer narrative power.

In his 2019 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Roots of Life,” American writer Richard Powers has one of his characters say the following sentence: “No matter how good our arguments are, we won’t change other people’s attitudes. The only thing that can do that is a good story.” It seems that in his new novel “The Big Game” Powers tried to write a story like that. A story that moves and leaves everyone who reads it changed. A story that, if enough people internalized it, could help keep our little earth safe from ourselves – but one at a time.
