The opera house of the year is in Berlin

The Komische Oper in Berlin has been named Opera House of the Year at the International Opera Awards. The honor was presented on Wednesday evening in Munich. Among the conductors, the Australian Simone Young, known for her Wagner interpretations, came out on top and has been chief conductor of the Sidney Symphony Orchestra since 2022.

Among the honors in numerous categories, there was also a prize for the best new production, which went to the production “Iphigénie en Aulide – Iphigénie en Tauride” from the Festival D’Aix-en-Provence. Christof Loy, whose production “La fiamma” can currently be seen at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, won in the directing category. Rufus Didwiszus, who works at the Bavarian State Opera among other places, won the stage design.

The British entrepreneur Harry Hyman founded the prizes in 2012. Since then, they have reportedly been awarded annually. The winners are selected by a jury led by “Opera” magazine. As The organizers name sponsors including opera star Plácido Domingo.
