Writer and science journalist Jani Kaaro received the Tietopöllö award

Jani Kaaro, who has written several non-fiction books, is “a popularizer of science in the best sense of the word”, the award justification states.

Nonfiction writer Jani Carole the non-fiction book award for children and young people, Tietopöllö, was awarded on Saturday. The prize is 8,000 euros.

Kaaro received the award given by Suomen tetokirjailijat ry at an event organized at the Turku book fair. In the award criteria, he is said to be “a popularizer of science in the best sense of the word”.

Kaaro’s interests are mentioned as “natural peoples, food culture and health, but above all nature and natural sciences”.

“Exactly the questions related to the phenomena of nature and space are the subjects of his non-fiction books for children”, the reasons continue.

Johnny Friend has written numerous non-fiction books. Working as a freelance science journalist, Kaaro’s texts have also been published in, for example, Helsingin Sanomat and Tiede-lehti.

In 2015, the Association of Finnish Science Journalists awarded Kaaro Science Journalist of the Year, and in 2013 he received the illustrator Väinö Heinonen from the children’s information book he made with Evolution The State Information Disclosure Award and the Lauri Jänti Foundation Award.
