Folie à Deux’ achieved 2.5 million in its opening weekend in Spain, almost half that of its predecessor

The sequel to ‘Joker’ has grossed 2.5 million euros in its first weekend of release at the Spanish box office, which is almost two million less than the first part five years ago, according to data from Comscore Spain.

Todd Philips’ film, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, premiered in Spanish cinemas last Friday, October 4, and was the most watched film this weekend in Spain, followed by ‘Bitelchús, Bitelchús’ and ‘Don’t talk to strangers.’

The first part of ‘Joker’ achieved 4.4 million euros in 2019 after being seen by 661,719 viewers in its first weekend, according to Comscore data, and ended up accumulating more than 30 million euros.

Globally, the film leads the box office in its debut in theaters with 121 million dollars, amassing only 40 million dollars (about 36 million euros) at the American box office, the main market, according to Variety, which recalls that the film has cost 200 million dollars and that in its first weekend of 2019 the first installment achieved 96 million dollars in North America.

Data that, according to the American media, are “disappointing”, highlighting that the criticism from both the public and experts has been “terrible.”

The film has been shown on 25,788 screens and in 76 foreign markets. Among the most notable results, ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ has achieved 8 million dollars in the United Kingdom, 6.9 million in Germany, 5.6 million in Italy, 5.5 million in Mexico and 5 million in France. Next week, the film will premiere in Japan before debuting in China on October 16.
