Lucía Sanromán is appointed chief curator of the University Museum of Contemporary Art

Contemporary art researcher Lucía Sanromán will replace Cuauhtémoc Medina as chief curator of the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC), starting next November 4.

The Cultural Diffusion Coordination of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) assured that with the appointment of the curator and writer, the General Directorate of Visual Arts, headed by Tatiana Cuevas, is consolidated.

The measure, it was reported in a statement, responds to the interest in a renewal so organized, planned and reasoned, understanding that one of the main resources of museum and cultural institutions is stability over time and their ability to define their pace of transformation in relation to new orientations of discourse and content.

It was announced that Medina, who has led the curatorial team since 2013, will rejoin in January 2025 as a full-time researcher at the UNAM Aesthetic Research Institute.

Sanromán, who was credited with a career marked by his attention in social or community artistic practices and the exploration of works by artists who manifest a plurality of epistemologies of identity and gender, since 2019 he has been the owner of the Alameda Art Laboratory.

Previously she was director of visual arts and general curator at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and was associate curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego from 2006 to 2011.

It was highlighted that Cuauhtémoc Medina developed at the MUAC a broad network of collaborations with institutions in Mexico and abroad that defined a contemporary experience shared with other cities and audiences.
