The prized nature photo competition was won by a picture of tadpoles radiating light – other prize-winning pictures include birds, monkeys and lynxes

Appreciated The Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition has been won by a Canadian Shane Gross with a picture The Swarm of Lifein Finnish “Elämän parvi”. Marine photographer Gross’s winning image shows a group of tadpoles underwater.

Gross took the winning photo in a lake on Vancouver Island on Canada’s west coast.

The jury was impressed by how the image combines light, energy and the connection between the tadpoles and their environment. The president of the jury Kathy Moranin it was also important to bring a new sport to the competition.

To the race almost 60,000 pictures from a total of 117 countries were sent. The hundred best photos of the competition will be on display at the Natural History Museum in London from October 11.
