Andrea Camilleri’s archive becomes digital and free

While waiting to celebrate the centenary of his birth in 2025, the Andrea Camilleri Fund Association – thanks to the work of the Archival and Bibliographic Superintendence of Lazio – is completing the digitization of the writer’s archive which from today becomes available for consultation through an organized online platform in different sections: published and unpublished writings (poems and stories, but also essays, articles, presentations, reports and public interventions of various kinds); the theater directions starting from the early ’50s and the essays of his directing classes at the Silvio d’Amico Academy of Dramatic Arts in the ’70s and ’80s; his work in Rai as a director of radio drama and as a production delegate; correspondence and a large amount of press reviews on his work and journalistic activity. There are also photographs and audiovisuals.

The archive and library, personally curated by Andrea Camilleri, preserve the author’s cultural heritage and reconstruct his human and intellectual journey which spanned much of the twentieth century. The sharing, usability and accessibility of this heritage are goals pursued by Camilleri himself and intrinsic to the conception of cultural and artistic work as a common good. The digital archive which can be consulted on the Archivio.fondoandreacamilleri.it website allows access to the database with free search for the recovery of information, with search by series, which documents the activities carried out by the writer during his professional life, and selection through filters, for targeted and contextual exploration of the documentation.

Andrea Camilleri’s archive was declared of particularly important historical interest by the Archival and Bibliographic Superintendency of Lazio in June 2021. Since then, the Superintendency has carried out a series of cataloging, reordering and inventorying of the archives thanks to a total funding of 45 thousand euros from the General Archives Directorate. Furthermore, the DGA awarded 4,500 euros to the archive for the realization of the ‘Andrea Camilleri and Rai.
