Variety’s interviewed according to sources, the critically acclaimed film may end up in the red by up to 200 million dollars, or around 184 million euros.
According to a statement from a spokesperson for Warner Bros., which produced the film, the estimates of the film’s success by anonymous “insiders” interviewed by Variety or executives of competing companies are incorrect.
The film was released less than two weeks ago. According to Variety, it has earned $51.5 million in the United States and $165 million worldwide. By comparison, the film’s predecessor received $96.2 million in the United States and $248.4 million worldwide after three days.
Box office receipts are estimated to stop at $65 million in the US and $210-215 million overseas. The film alone reportedly cost $200 million to produce. 100 million dollars were spent on marketing and distribution of the film.
Variety’s according to that, the film should get at least $450 million at the box office to break even. The cinemas showing the film also get their share of the ticket sales. According to sources inside Warner Bros., the film would need at least $375 million to break even.
The first movie Joker was one of the highest grossing movies based on comic books and it seems that even Lady Gagan with star power, the sequel doesn’t even come close to the record-breaking first installment.
In the negative reviews, the sequel has been described as too long and the story thin, among other things. Not everyone has liked the execution of the film either. Unlike the first film, the sequel is a musical.
