Toledo hosts this Thursday the central event of the Ministry of Culture’s Library Day

The Ministry of Culture commemorates this Thursday, October 24, Library Day 2024, under the motto ‘For a sustainable future’ with which it aims to highlight the role that these spaces have in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the Agenda 2030.

The public department considers that libraries contribute to building an increasingly better-informed, more egalitarian, supportive and fair society, “fully aware of the need to lead a sustainable way of life as a commitment to future generations.”

The central event of Library Day will take place at the Public Library of Castilla-La Mancha (Toledo), where there will be discussion about the current contributions of libraries to equality and future projects in the round table ‘Equality and libraries’.

After the round table, the winners and finalists of the ‘Sustainable Libraries’ micro-story competition, organized by the Ministry of Culture last August, will be announced. As part of the day, numerous activities will be carried out in Toledo throughout the day.

In the morning, the general director of Books, Comics and Reading, María José Gálvez, will accompany a bookmobile on its tour through rural areas of the province, stopping in the town of Villamuelas. The narrative activity ‘The Life of Solfi’ will take place here, a narrative whose objective is to learn about music and instruments and which seeks to highlight the role of mobile libraries in small communities.

In addition, the exhibition ‘Sustineri Progressio in Bibliotheca: Ancient problems, urgent solutions’ will be inaugurated in the Public Library of Castilla-La Mancha and an interest center for readings related to sustainability will be installed. To end the day, a piano concert will be offered by Momentum.

The design of this year’s poster, available in all the languages ​​of the State, was the work of illustrator Nicolás Aznárez. Furthermore, for the commemorative video, the Ministry of Culture has had the collaboration of the writer and popularizer Jorge Carrión, who has sponsored this edition of Library Day as a firm defender of these institutions and their democratizing role in society, a point of meeting and connection for families and communities.

In this edition of Library Day, the department led by Ernest Urtasun praises libraries for, among other things, adopting sustainable practices to reduce their ecological footprint, such as the implementation of energy-efficient buildings and recycling programs.

Likewise, they are accessible spaces open to the participation of citizens, who seek in them a meeting place, to exchange opinions and knowledge, to implement new ideas and projects, being especially relevant in rural areas.

Finally, Culture highlights that libraries contribute to reducing the digital divide, providing access to new technologies and training in digital skills for people of all ages and contexts, in line with the Digital Spain 2026 Strategy and the objectives of the Europe’s Digital Decade.
