Unions warn that the National Library does not have a plan to protect heritage in case of emergencies

CSIF, Workers Commissions and UGT the three union organizations of the National Library of Spain (BNE), have criticized the absence of a plan to protect the bibliographic heritage of the BNE in case of emergencies.

This was stated by the three unions in a joint statement, to which Europa Press has had access, after the flooding occurred in the National Library due to the rains that fell on October 16.

In the statement, they denounce the “poor management” of the BNE directorates after the general reform carried out in the 90s, “leading to precarious maintenance of the Recoletos and Alcalá facilities”

Likewise, the unions warn of the “lack of investment in human and material resources that has led to the current deterioration of the institution.”

For this reason, they demand that the Administration take immediate action regarding the incidents that have occurred in the last year that “have put the bibliographic funds and the BNE staff at risk”, as well as carrying out a comprehensive renovation of the building.

The unions also request the development and implementation of a Bibliographic Heritage Protection Plan in case of emergency; provide sufficient human and material resources necessary for the proper functioning of the BNE and the safety of its personnel; and carry out “correct and transparent” communication with the union centers through their delegates in the institution.
