Daniel Kehlmann’s “Lichtspiel” at the Munich Volkstheater: Too close to the original

It is an astonishing coincidence that this premiere takes place on the same day that Andres Veiel’s documentary “Riefenstahl” hits cinemas. Christian Stückl brings Daniel Kehlmann’s novel “Lichtspiel” to the stage of the Munich Volkstheater, the novel about the film director GW Pabst, which was published last year. Leni Riefenstahl made the Nazi party rally films for the Nazis and was the favorite of Reich Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels for a long time, until her caprices became too much for even him. After the war, she claimed with stubborn chutzpah that she had never been a National Socialist.
