The second season of the acclaimed Sherwood series is disappointing

BBC:n crime series Sherwood hit the pain points of the British audience two years ago. As a skilfully constructed drama, it opened the local chains of generations for the rest of us as well.

Sherwood Forest is remembered as the home of Robin Hood, and in the series the old legend became part of modern-day crimes. The murders were carried out with a bow, and the name of the nearby city of Nottingham has a mythical echo that by James Graham the script utilized.

Forty-year-old Graham himself comes from the Nottingham area. It is an area that was torn apart by a mining strike in the 1980s, and it is from those scars Sherwood– the series also tells.

Thus to outsiders, it seems that the British have spent the 1980s, Thatcher’s reigns and strikes countless times by means of TV dramas, but something from the first season in Sherwood still hit particularly hard.

Judging by everything, the creator of the new generation found an as-yet-untouched deposit. Praised by critics and audiences alike, the series succeeded in what Dramas are best at: unpacking collective traumas and ultimately bringing solace.

But no mercy after all, if the second season of the series is to be believed. Violence is rushing out of the hands of the youth again, and the fuel still comes from their parents.

Now it’s not so much about criminals anymore, but rather the credibility of the police force. In the first season, it was still unclear who all were working as infiltrating police officers during the mining strike.

British critics have welcomed the second season with praise, or at least some of them. Critic for The Guardian give the second season five starsalthough a slight doubt can be read between the lines.

The praise is confusing, because the new episodes are nowhere near the level of the first season. Graham is forgiven a lot now for giving so much away in the original series.

The second season’s biggest flaw is context. It shows brutality episode after episode, and the explanation is just a loose cycle of revenge that makes people do stupid things. Code, spirit for spirit, as Ann Branson, the mother of the first victim, emphatically states.

The biggest problem is the Bransons’ bad couple, who go on their revenge trip. They are just awful, especially Ann, who is a great actress Monica Dolan could find other levels.

When the main focus is given to the crime plot, attention is drawn to annoying inconsistencies. Why Daphne, familiar from season one (Lorraine Ashbourne) will go along with the Bransons’ revenge trip without a murmur?

Side characters are unfinished and over-the-top, like Succession-the spiritual relationship between a cynical capitalist father and son, and on the other hand Daphne’s hidden daughter, Rachel, who was adopted as a child (Christine Bottomley), which “blood” draws into the mother’s circle of life. A questionable theory about violence.

There is also a fault in the steering. The second season has different directors, Clio Barnard and Tom Georgewhose work has no special idea, and there is no sense of place in the description, which is absolutely essential in this series. Community is just background wallpaper.

The originals Actors Lorraine Ashbourne and David Morrissey get to continue their strong roles, and their presence brings life to the scenes. Also Lesley Manville returns to the picture but unfortunately in a small part.

Otherwise, the second season is just a regular crime series. The Guardian also cautiously expressed the hope that the series would not continue.
