Bertrand Cantat and his group announce an album for December 2024

Detroit, the formation of the former singer of Noir Désir, had not recorded a record since 2013.

Eleven years after a first album, Detroit, Bertrand Cantat’s group will release a second on December 6. In February 2024, the group had already unveiled a new song: L’Angle, at the same time as a crowdfunding campaign. The latter was then a great success and allowed the group to raise 217,011 euros in just a few days via the Ulule platform. This campaign then provoked the indignation of feminist associations and numerous personalities outraged that Bertrand Cantat, sentenced to 8 years in prison for the murder of Marie Trintignant in 2003, could benefit from crowdfunding. Under pressure, the platform finally dissociated itself from the project and paid its entire commission to an association helping women victims of domestic violence.

The murder of Marie Trintignant

When he met Marie Trintignant in 2002, Bertrand Cantat had been married to Kristina Rady for 9 years and the actress to Samuel Benchetrit for 8 years. Their story seems passionate. Very quickly they abandon their spouses and children and move in together. But on the night of July 26 to 27, 2003, the actress, who was working on a shoot in Lithuania, received 19 blows to the face and body, delivered by Bertrand Cantat. The actress died of her injuries on August 1. Tried in Vilnius, the ex-leader of Noir Désir will be sentenced to eight years in prison for “murder committed in the event of undetermined indirect intent”.

Since his early release from prison in 2007, Bertrand Cantat has tried, in various forms, to resume a normal artistic life, with varying degrees of happiness. For example, the singer’s tour in 2018 was very disrupted by the call for a boycott from feminist associations. Under pressure, the singer had to cancel several of his concerts. It now remains to be seen whether for this new album, Cantat and his group will have the right to be forgotten. Nothing is less certain.
