He Madrid Fine Arts Circle will host next Monday, November 18, the premiere of ‘La Vida en Lienzo’a documentary that offers an intimate look at the work and life of Canarian artist Pepe Dámaso.
This has been advanced by the promoters of this project, who have detailed that the audiovisual work is written and directed by Gustavo Socorro, and produced by Atlasley Films.
‘Life on Canvas’which has been recorded over more than a year and a half in locations such as the Canary Islands, Madrid and New York, has been “a process of deep immersion in the emotional, spiritual and artistic world of Dámaso“, they have highlighted.
In this way, the documentary work shows the painter’s life and explores his link with the culture and nature of the Canary Islands, and his relationship with essential cultural figures such as César Manrique. The work has had the support of the Culture areas of the City Councils of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Maspalomas).
Through letters, photographs and memories, the film reveals unprecedented aspects of his friendship and collaboration with César Manrique, allowing the viewer to delve into the symbolic universe that both artists shared and how their ties influenced Dámaso’s work. “‘Life on Canvas’ delves into a world where art becomes a vehicle for survival and a refuge from pain and adversity. The connection between the artist and his land is a common thread in the story, reinforcing the idea that his work transcends painting and sculpture to integrate into the history and soul of the islands,” they added.
“This film not only documents his life, but delves into his fears, dreams and obsessions, such as death and spirituality, which permeate his work and give it a special universality.“explains director Gustavo Socorro.
The premiere at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, whose event will be presented by the president of the Casa de Canarias of Madrid, Roberto Miño Reig, will also host the presentation of the Institution’s Medal of Honor to Pepe Dámaso. Atlasley Films is in talks with streaming platforms and national and international television networks with the aim of bringing the documentary to a global audience.
