The Russian dancer Vladimir Shklyarov has died prematurely at the age of 39, as announced by the Mariinsky Theatre where he was the principal dancer since 2011.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the untimely passing of principal dancer Vladimir Shklyarov. Mr. Shklyarov, a beloved artist and public favorite, tragically passed away on November 16. His loss is deeply felt by the entire Mariinsky family and the ballet world in general.“, the institution published this Monday on its website.
According to the Russian media ‘Fontanka’, Shklyarov died after falling from the fifth floor last Saturday. “Vladimir Shklyarov suffered a back injury and a complex spinal operation was scheduled for Monday, November 18. During all this time he was taking strong painkillers.”Anna Kasatkina, head of the Mariinsky Theater press service, told the Russian media.
Shklyarov joined the Mariinsky company in 2003 after graduating from the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet. He was promoted to principal dancer in 2011captivating audiences with its artistic expressiveness and technical brilliance. His talent was recognized with numerous awards, culminating in the title of Honored Artist of Russia in 2020.
