The city of Oslo cut its theater funding by more than 40 percent, one stage is closed

After the pandemic, the theater, which has run into financial difficulties, has to make tough austerity measures.

Norwegian Oslo Nye Teater, one of the most famous theaters, has to reduce its operations drastically due to funding cuts.

Norwegian Broadcasting NRK: n according to, it has been decided to cut the funding of the theater owned by the city of Oslo by more than 40 percent. The city has previously granted 90 million Norwegian kroner, or more than 7.7 million euros per year, to the operation of the theater, and now 37.5 million, or more than 3.2 million euros, will be cut from the support.

Due to the cuts, the theater has to close one of its three stages, reduce performances and lay off employees.

In the year Oslo Nye Teater, founded in 1927, operates in three theater houses, of which Trikkestalle, which specializes in children’s theater, has to be closed.

Nye Teater actor interviewed by NRK Nils Ole Oftebro blames the cuts on the conservative party in the majority in the Oslo city council.

“This is the death of the theatre,” Oftebro says.

Oslo Nye Teater has suffered from financial difficulties in the post-pandemic period, and the city management has demanded austerity measures from the theater.

The management of the theater has assured that Oslo Nye Teater’s operation will continue despite the cuts.
