Finlandia award-winning author Magdalena Hai boycotted the Linna’s celebrations

The author, who received the Finlandia prize for children’s and youth literature last year, justifies his decision with Finland’s political culture.

In the year 2023 author who won the Finlandia prize for children’s and young people’s literature Magdalena Hai says that he will not participate in Linna’s celebrations, i.e. the Independence Day reception organized by the President of the Republic.

Hai tells about his decision by posting on Instagram on video. He justifies the decision with Finland’s political culture.

“I have two reasons for that. The second is that we have an extreme right-wing party in government, and I find it confusing how many Finns think that’s okay. That so many Finns have supported the extreme right, which practices racist politics.”

Shark no mention the party by name, but the basic Finnish party has also started to be referred to as extreme right in Finland, although political researchers have not usually gone that far. For example, someone who has studied the extreme right Tommi Kotonen defined Perussuomalaiset Yleisradio in the interview after the summer 2017 party conference, as a right-wing radical rather than an extreme right-wing party.

Instead, Hai mentions one politician by name, namely the Minister of Economic Affairs of a basic Finn by Wille Rydman.

Hai says that the main reason for not participating in Linna’s celebrations is the confidence vote in June, in which Rydman won the confidence of the parliament with a vote of 92–76.

The opposition, which submitted an interlocutory question, argued that Rydman, by exploiting the minister’s visibility and prestige, has smeared individuals and the media who reported on his activities.

Helsingin Sanomat published two years ago the articlein which it was told how Rydman, who was then a parliament member of the coalition, used his political position to get in touch with young women and girls.

Rydman denied the article’s claims and made a request for an investigation. The prosecutor decided after the preliminary investigation at the beginning of June that the journalists who wrote about the subject will not face charges. Rydman is also not accused of anything.

“This is an indication of such moral decay from the parliament that I don’t feel like dancing with them at the same party,” Hai said in his Instagram video.

Investigator Emilia Palonen not in the summer of 2023 Up in the morning defined the Fundamental Finns as a whole as a far-right party, but noted that some Fundamental Finns consciously use a far-right way of speaking in order to attract like-minded voters.

Palonen’s comments were related to the one appointed as Minister of Economy Vilhelm Junnilan to old speeches and performances that surfaced in 2023 after the formation of the government.

With the uproar, Perussuomalaiset appointed Rydman to replace Junnila as Minister of Economy.

This had left the coalition and joined Basic Finns after Helsingin Sanomat was made news of his behavior in the company of young women.
