Rapper Ege Zulu receives an art award of 10,000 euros: “A significant role model”

Uusimaa’s art committee took note of Ege Zulu’s ability to verbalize the feelings of the city’s young people.

Rap-artists Ege Zulu eli Eugene Island receives the Uusimaa Art Award in recognition of his meritorious work in Finnish rap music. The prize is awarded by the Art Committee of Uusimaa and its value is 10,000 euros.

In its award criteria, the Uusimaa Art Committee thanks Ege Zulu’s music for its unique sound and rhythm, as well as lyrics, which have brought new tones to domestic rap music.

“Growing up in Helsinki’s Roihuvuori, Ege Zulu has become a significant role model, especially for young people from East Helsinki. His career encourages and creates hope for those who are just considering their own choices. Ege Zulu’s positive attitude towards life can be seen especially in his ability to verbalize the feelings of a city-dwelling young person through music,” the justifications say.

in Helsinki born Ege Zulu (b. 1999) has family roots in the Congo. He released his first record Swengar’s at own expense in 2021. Another record Oh Helsinki of our country released in 2022 and the third album Mama’s boy in the spring of 2024.
