The Oxford dictionary defines brain rot as “the supposed deterioration of a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially as a result of overconsumption of material considered trivial or unquestionable (nowadays especially online content)”.

The winning word was chosen by voting. More than 37,000 people took part in the vote, which was organized by Oxford University Press and the world’s second oldest publisher, Oxford University Press (OUP).

“Brain rot is about the perceived dangers of virtual life and how we spend our free time. It feels like a legitimate next chapter in the cultural conversation about humanity and technology,” Director of Oxford Languages Casper Grathwohl says.

The first known written mention of brain rot is from 1854, when Henry David Thoreaun used it in his book Waldenbut the term has taken on a new meaning in the digital age.

A year six words were nominated as a word. The other candidates were “demure”, “lore”, “slop”, “romantasy” and dynamic pricing. Romance refers to a fictional genre that combines romance and fantasy, slop low-quality content online, created with the help of artificial intelligence and dynamic pricing of the price of a product or service, which varies according to demand.

Lore refers to facts and background information related to something, and demure refers to reticence and shyness. The term came up in the summer, when a trend spread on social media, aiming for considered and restrained behavior in stressful situations, for example.

Earlier winners have included the words “rizz” (2023) and “goblin mode” (2022). The word rizz favored by Generation Z is English slang and means a person’s charm or attraction, the ability to attract a romantic partner.

The term “goblin mode” could be translated into “hiisimoodi” in Finnish. It means being unapologetically self-centered, lazy, careless, or greedy in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.
