Teatros del Canal premieres ‘All Birds’ by Wajdi Mouawad, a “terrifying” metaphor of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict

This Tuesday, Teatros del Canal presented the new production ‘All Birds’, a text by the Lebanese playwright Wajdi Mouawad, directed by Mario Gas, which it will host starting next Thursday, December 5, and in which the Palestinian conflict is metaphorically exposed. -Israeli.

“It is a terrifying metaphor for all the misunderstanding that exists between human beings. It is a text of furious relevance due to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which is used as a metaphor for phagocytations, the historical thoughts between communities and people who seem to be different Mouawad advocates because everyone is a bird,” the playwright Mario Gas commented at a press conference.

Gas explains that it is a text that you cannot “get away from” and he trusts that the work will “impact” the public, just as it did with him. “I really wanted to put it on stage. I’m very attracted to the text,” he says.

The playwright has assured that Mouawad is “one of the most profound theater directors that exist” and praises his vocation to tell stories “with a powerful and direct language”, especially after fleeing from Lebanon to Paris when he was a child due to civil conflicts. . “He uses metaphor and poetry in his stories, but at the same time he enters very directly and very harshly from what he knows and has suffered on his own as a Lebanese child,” said Mario Gas.

“What it seeks is to demonstrate that all the separations, the annihilations, all the fundamentalisms, the identities that develop along false paths are nothing more than impediments for us all to understand each other and be what we are, ultimately different but very very equal” Gas stressed.

The cast of the play was headed by Núria Espert, who had to leave the project due to health problems, and in her place will be Vicky Peña who has acknowledged that everyone was “devastated” when they heard the news. “I was already in the cast of the play, but this role came to me as a rebound. When the incident with Núria happened, we were all devastated not to be able to count on her naturally, because Núria is a great actress and an indispensable person” , he stated.

Peña will be accompanied by Manuel de Blas, Pere Ponce, Candela Serrat, Aleix Peña, Pietro Olivera, Lucía Barrado, Nuria García, Juan Calot and Anabel Moreno. The play will remain at the Teatros del Canal until December 29, except for the 24th and 25th.

‘All Birds’ is produced by Pilar de Yzaguirre, who recalled that the project should have been staged four years ago, but difficulties prevented its premiere until now. “It has been very expensive. I don’t understand why sometimes in this country, things that are very good take so long to come to fruition,” he said.
