Congratulations! How did the gig at Linna’s party go?
“Stubb took it, or Mr. President, and asked us for coffee and asked if we wanted to come and play at the party. He said that their family has listened to and felt our music.”
Did the president tell you in more detail who in the family listens to you?
“Well, he said that he and his wife have been listening and that the children have also been introduced to the music.”
A couple of years ago, Sanna Marin expressed her crush during the Elämäni biisi program. Why is it that you are the favorite band of both the right-wing president and the left-wing ex-prime minister?
“It’s hard to say, we don’t choose our listeners. We just make music, and it doesn’t matter if the political views are different. Although it’s great in its own way that our music has been liked by both left-wing and right-wing politicians. Music has been a unifying factor.”
Could it be because you have announced that you are striving to be the nicest band in Finland?
“Maybe that has something to do with it.”
Are you more flattered by Stubb’s or Marin’s appreciation?
“It doesn’t matter. All listeners are equal. On the other hand, I don’t feel that if a left-wing politician or a right-wing politician liked us, we wouldn’t have taken a stand on that. After all, independence is Finland’s celebration that unites the entire nation, no matter what party it is. We are celebrating together.”
Does your own young heart beat on the right or on the left?
“Maybe it’s slightly tilted to the left, but I don’t know. It depends on the day. And that can change with time. It can move along, the more you learn and see the world.”
By the way, do you drink red or white mulled wine at Christmas?
“Red.”
During the US presidential election, many artists were upset that Trump used their music in the campaign without permission. Is there a party you wouldn’t let use your music?
“Well, some extreme right-wing parties that practice racism and oppose human rights.”
After the party in the castle, you performed the following week at a concert supporting the activities of the Women’s Line in Tavastia. Has the violence experienced by women ever come close in your own life?
“Many friends have said that they have experienced violence and sexual harassment as well. So participating in the concert is the least I can do. Being able to do something good with music is the thing.”
Which song do you hope the presidential couple will listen to especially carefully in the Linna?
”Here and now is used to be Stubb’s, or Mr. President’s, favorite song, and that’s what we play. It’s a nice message that we’re in the moment in life.”
Not worrying about the future or crying about the past?
“Yes, we learn from the past and we cannot know the future. That’s why this moment is significant and important.”
Finally: what does independence mean to you?
“Freedom and security at least.”
