Yesterday, the United States government returned to Mexico a sculpture of Saint Rose of Lima from the 17th century, as well as six pieces of pre-Hispanic origin.
In a ceremony held at the Templo Mayor Museum, Ambassador Ken Salazar pointed out that as a result of binational cooperation to combat the illicit trafficking of cultural property, in the recent decade around 10,500 archaeological pieces of national heritage from of the United States.
The sculpture of Santa Rosa de Lima was stolen in 2007 from the parish of Santa Mónica in the municipality of Epazoyucan, Hidalgo. The Attorney General’s Office located the stolen piece on American soil and with the help of the authorities of that country managed to recover it.
The head of International Exhibitions and Multilateral Cooperation, Iraís Avilés García, stressed that for Mexico, cultural heritage does not constitute an asset of commercial or collecting value; On the contrary, it is the bearer of identities, of peoples, their history and their future.
