Top Gun – an actor known for his films Tom Cruise was awarded the US Navy Medal on Tuesday for his work as an actor. The badge of honor was reported by, among others, the US media CNN.
The actor, known for his many action roles, plays in the film Top Gun (1989) and its sequel Top Gun: Maverick (2022) United States Navy fighter pilot.
According to the US media, Cruise was awarded the medal because his work has already inspired representatives of several generations to apply for the Navy and Marine Corps. After the release of the classic film, the navy recruitment saw a flood of applicants.
Cruising the acting performances were said to have increased people’s understanding and appreciation of the sacrifices made by naval professionals.
“I am happy that I have been able to serve as an inspiration to many current and former Navy personnel,” Cruise said.
The award is the United States Navy’s highest decoration that can be awarded to civilians. The award is given for exceptional heroism or sustained service to the Navy or Marines.
