Sheinbaum proposes merging entities linked to indigenous peoples

The federal government intends to consolidate into a single institution the efforts of several agencies related to indigenous peoples and their cultural wealth, announced President Claudia Sheinbaum. As part of the obligations derived from the constitutional reform on the rights of the indigenous population, We want to unite in a single institution what is currently divided, Fonart, Popular Cultures, Indigenous Languages; that are part of a single institution.

He stressed that another purpose is the recovery of Mexico’s cultural heritage: I wish Spain would get involved in returning to Mexico many of the pieces that were taken at some point.. He said that just as the National Institute of Anthropology and History is dedicated to prior study, that there also be an institution that focuses on the recovery, cultural rescue or cultural experience of today’s native peoples.

Sheinbaum considered that the reform of the second constitutional article requires them to recover their rights, but also involves the way in which indigenous languages ​​are recovered, enhanced and strengthened, the textiles they make and many aspects surrounding indigenous peoples, including the return of land and guarantee their right to water.

With reference to the symbolism of the Mayan Train for the ancestors, the President insisted on questioning the meaning that has been given to the Conquest: It brought a lot of death, most of it violent; the other, although it was also violent, due to many diseases that were not known in what we later called the American continent, and that were brought from Europe..

For this reason, the president added, there is talk of 500 years of resistance by indigenous peoples starting from the rupture caused by that violent invasion. In this context, he stressed that without the Mayan culture, which is preserved to this day, it would not have been possible to recover and dimension what that civilization was before the Conquest and, in general, of all the native peoples.

The Mayan Train, he said, is a project that links the Mayans of before and those of now, that is why it is a cry against discrimination.
