Football: Netflix acquires the rights to the next two Women’s World Cups on American territory

In the eternal soap opera of broadcasting rights for sports competitions, Netflix has just struck a major blow. Invested in sport in recent years, and with the great success on November 16 of the boxing fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul, the American streaming giant announced this Friday an agreement with FIFA for exclusive broadcasting in the United States. United, the 2027 and 2031 Women’s World Cups.

Faced with a giant in the sector, Fox, which had acquired the rights to the last three editions, Netflix won the stake in a historic deal for women’s football, the amount of which was not disclosed. Historic, in particular, because it was the first time that these rights were sold alone, and not included in a global deal like the one previously signed by Fox with Fifa.

“This is a pivotal moment in the history of sports media rights,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino. A renowned brand and new long-term partner of FIFA, Netflix has demonstrated a deep commitment to the development of women’s football. This agreement sends a strong message about the real value of the Women’s World Cup and global women’s football. The partnership between FIFA and Netflix constitutes a historic step forward for audiovisual broadcasting and for this discipline. »

An exclusive docuseries ahead of the competitions

FIFA specifies in a press release that in addition to the live broadcast of the matches and the magazines around them, “Netflix will produce an exclusive docuseries in the months preceding the two events in order to highlight the best female footballers on the planet , their respective journeys to the high level and the global growth of their sport”. In recent years, Netflix has particularly distinguished itself in this area, with certain docuseries which have toured the world, notably that on the Tour de France.

If the location of the 2027 World Cup is already known – it will take place in Brazil, which was awarded the organization last May – that of 2031 has not yet been allocated. In France, the broadcast of the last World Cup in particular was only decided very late, and was finally broadcast by France Télévisions and M6.
