The archaeological zone of Chichén Itzá received its 2 million 200 thousand visitor of 2024 this Thursday, consolidating itself as one of the cultural destinations in Mexico most frequented by tourism, reported the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). .
This distinction corresponded to the horticulture teacher Auri Marili Gutiérrez Vázquez, originally from Apodaca, Nuevo León, to whom INAH authorities, in coordination with directors of the Yucatán Tourism Business Council (Cetur Yucatán), presented an award and provided a personalized tour of that ancient Mayan city, whose peak occurred during the Early Postclassic period, between the years 900 and 1200 AD.
In addition, Gutiérrez Vázquez received a congratulatory letter, a collection of books and a special visit to the Great Museum of Chichén Itzá, a venue that opened its doors in March 2024 and which, with its 500 pieces, offers an approach to life daily news of the pre-Hispanic metropolis that for three centuries controlled the territory of what is now northern Yucatán.
The event was attended by the director of the Chichén Itzá visitor service center, Guadalupe Espinosa Rodríguez; the president of Cetur Yucatán, Jorge Carrillo Sáenz; the delegate of custodians of the National Union of Workers of the Ministry of Culture, Felipe Yam Pat, and the head of the Administration Department of the archaeological zone, Maricela Dzul Ucán.
According to a statement from the aforementioned federal agency, this annual recognition confirms that Chichén Itzá is a recreational, training and educational space for those who come to learn about the history and mystique radiated by its archaeological monuments, each of which is investigated, preserved and disseminated as cultural heritage of the Yucatecans, Mexicans and the entire world.
