Kaurismäki’s Dead leaves were selected for the Vatican’s film recommendations

In the year A movie released in 2023 Dead leaves has received media attention in the Vatican. The country’s official media Vatican News has listed Aki Kaurismäki film for the film recommendations of the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year.

Jubilee is a special year of celebration and pilgrimage celebrated by the Catholic Church, dedicated to spiritual renewal, repentance and pilgrimage. A jubilee year is usually celebrated every 25 years.

Pope Francis has chosen hope as the theme of the jubilee year to be celebrated in 2025.

Vatican officials and film experts have listed movie recommendations suitable for the jubilee theme starting in November. In addition to Kaurismäki, the recommendations include, among others Vittorio De Sican The Gate of Heaven (1945) as well as Wim Wendersin Perfect Days (2023).

According to Vatican News, Kaurismäki’s film describes the hope of depressed and lonely people.

“What I loved about this film, in addition to the dry humor and subtle delicious acting, is that even these depressed, lonely people have hope around them that saves them and pulls them together,” film critic and pastor Greg Apparcel write.
