Paolo Benvegnù has died, he was 59 years old. Yesterday the last performance on Rai

The Milanese singer-songwriter Paolo Benvegnu’ has died at the age of 59. The family announced this in a note. The causes of death are not known.

“Companion, father, songwriter and musician loved by anyone who was lucky enough to meet him on their path – they write – Paolo Benvegnu’ passed away today at the age of 59. Paolo was a man capable of infusing beauty and poetry into anything did as demonstrated by his long career and the songs he has published in recent years. Winner of the Targa Tenco 2024 with “It’s useless to talk about love” as the “Best Album ever” he had just released “PICCOLI FRAGILISSIMI FILM – RELOADED”, a new version of the album that had marked his solo debut in 2004 and which this year had turned 20 years. Paolo had been protagonist in the episode broadcast last night of the program Via dei matti n.0 and we want to remember him with his words and his voice.”

Benvegnù began to make inroads in the 90s, the heroic era of Italian indie rock, with the project Schismwhere he is singer, guitarist and principal songwriter. The band performs on Italian and European stages and releases three albums – “Bombardano Cortina” in 1995, “Rosemary Plexiglas” in 1997 and “Armstrong” in 1999 – the second of which, produced by Manuel Agnelli of Afterhours, wins the Ciampi Award .

Once the Schism experience concluded at the dawn of the new millennium, the Milanese artist tried his hand as a theater actor, producer and author for names such as Mina, Irene Grandi and Marina Rei. His solo debut came in 2004 with the album “Piccoli Fragilissimi Film”, followed by a long tour. In the following years, 8 LPs, numerous EPs and five finalist nominations for the Targa Tenco will arrive, all accompanied by an always intense live activity.

It is difficult to untangle the vast array of collaborations and side projects in which Benvegnù participated during his very intense career. We can mention “Proiettili Buoni”, created with Marco Parente in 2009, the intersection between music and literature of “I Racconti delle Nebbie” and the acoustic reinterpretations of those new wave classics that constituted his background.

The latest LP of unreleased songs, “It’s useless to talk about love”, dates back to January 19th. A re-edition of the debut would arrive on October 11th, created with a large audience of guests, from Paolo Fresu to Malika Ayane, from Piero Pelù to La representative di list. The tour to present it began just last November.
