Museo del Objeto hosts an intriguing exhibition that defies logic

The Museo del Objeto del Objeto (MODO) offers a unique and intriguing experience with its newest exhibition: Nonsense. The exhibition, which brings together more than 200 carefully selected pieces, challenges conventional notions of logic by fusing art, Dadaism, surrealism and the literature of the absurd.

The montage was devised by curator Luis Rodríguez, who explained that the inspiration for the project arose from finding a series of mysterious artifacts in the museum’s archives. These objects, whose origin and function were uncertain, were the starting point to explore the possibilities of the absurd.

Looking at these elements, their apparent uselessness became a creative challenge. I decided to relate them to artistic movements that, like Dadaism and Surrealism, reject traditional logic.said Rodríguez in an interview with The Day.

Unlike conventional exhibitions, the arrangement of objects in Nonsense It does not follow a linear or predictable order. The elements are organized in such a way that, when walking through the rooms, visitors are surrounded by an amalgam of reflections and distortions, created by strategically placed mirrors.

These reflections interact with the pieces, so that each visitor can have an experience unique and introspectiveas surrealism proposed in its beginnings. The work of the painter René Magritte, especially his famous painting This is not a pipe, inspires this visual concept, which invites us to question the relationship between representations and reality itself.

The exhibition is populated with disconcerting pieces: industrial machines from bygone eras, tools whose purpose seems lost in time and artifacts whose function is completely indecipherable.

Each exhibited object becomes an enigma, a blank canvas where the viewer must contribute their interpretation. According to Rodríguez, Not knowing what these objects are allows us to create a new meaning for them, play with them and give them a different function, which reflects the spirit of Dadaism and nonsense..

incomprehensible words

The influence of absurd literature is present in the exhibition with works by authors such as Lewis Carroll. The curator mentioned the poem Jabberwockyof Alice through the looking glass as one of the most representative examples of this literary genre that gives priority to sound play and metrics, above the logical meaning of expressions.

The words invented by Carroll do not seek to be understood, but rather to provoke emotions and laughter. That is precisely what we aspire to reproduceadded Luis Rodríguez, who highlighted that in this exhibition you can enjoy the absurd and the playful, in addition to generating intellectual reflections.

“In each room the visitor will enter the ordered chaos typical of Dadaism, a movement that was born as a recreational and rebellious reaction to the horrors of the First World War.

The project’s approach is inspired by the work of artists such as Marcel Duchamp and his famous use of found objects that initially lacked a clear functional purpose and are elevated to the rank of art and become powerful symbols of the subversion of the established order.

Surrealism plays an essential role in the structure of the exhibition. The pieces on display, many with the appearance of everyday objects, invite visitors to reconsider their perception of the everyday. Irony and humor, distinctive characteristics of this artistic movement, are integrated with the elements of Dadaism to offer a unique experience, where objects acquire the ability to narrate personal and collective stories from different perspectives.

The exhibition also pays tribute to the fascination with mechanics, a distinctive characteristic of the early 20th century, which profoundly influenced the artistic movements of the time. Through mechanical portraits, surrealist pieces and references to the Beat generations, a dynamic dialogue emerges between historical periods, artistic styles and cultural perspectives.

A notable example of this visual dialogue is the portrait of Edward James, Magritte’s influential patron, whose silhouette appears reflected from behind in a mirror. This work generates a paradox that highlights the complex relationship between image, perception and reality.

For Luis Rodríguez, the exhibition transcends the simple exhibition of objects, since “it proposes a deep reflection on the value of things in a context marked by planned obsolescence and accelerated consumption.

Viewers will be able to reflect on the transience of objects in a constantly changing world. Each piece, although seemingly insignificant, reflects the cultural, historical and emotional impact that objects can have on our lives.

The exhibition Nonsense It can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at MODO (Colima 145, Colonia Roma). Admission costs 60 pesos. The exhibition will end on January 26.
