Oasis tickets skyrocketing, the British government wants to limit the cost

The British government has announced that it wants limit the cost of resold tickets for concerts and events with the aim of cracking down on touts who charge inflated prices. The proposals come following widespread public anger, a few months ago, over the exorbitant cost of some tickets to attend the tour of reunion della band Britpop Oasis this year. The government said it had noticed “a worrying increase in fans wanting to obtain tickets to popular tours and events and clashing with professional touts who hoard tickets and resell them at highly inflated prices.”

It added in a press release that others have been “caught out by the lack of transparency around the dynamic pricing system,” a practice in which official ticket sellers adjust prices based on demand.

Last August, brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher have announced their intention to put aside their differences and bring Oasis back to the stage this summer. Fans trying to buy tickets on official sites have come across dynamic pricing which has sent prices skyrocketing, while some tickets have sold for thousands of pounds on unofficial resale sites.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labor government said tickets were often resold to a price up to six times higher than the original one. “From sports tournaments to Taylor Swift, major events have too often been thwarted by consumers taking advantage of scalpers,” Economy Minister Jonathan Reynolds said in a statement. The government said a consultation will seek views on limiting resale prices.
