News anchor Marjo Rein resigned from Yle

Mightily news anchor Marjo Rein has resigned from his job at Yle. He anchored his last newscast on Tuesday, January 14.

Rein published a Facebook update about his resignation on Tuesday that is only visible to some. In it, Rein states that the reason for his departure is that recent years have changed news journalism in such a way that he does not feel that his work as a producer and presenter is meaningful. Rein describes that if the network’s fragmentary material and “selfie journalism” are forced into TV news, it is not appropriate for him.

Helsingin Sanomat reached out to Rein on Wednesday, but he said via text message that he would not comment further on the matter. In his Facebook text, Rein criticizes, for example, the lack of interest in news broadcasts by front-runners.

Yle refused to comment on Reini’s views to Helsingin Sanomat, citing issues related to individual people’s employment relationships.

Rhine Ilta-Sanomat previously reported on the dismissal. Head of Yle’s news desk Katariina Luoma quoth Ilta-Sanom for example, that Yle is constantly looking for answers to changes in the world, media use, and the needs and preferences of audiences. In addition, Luoma mentions that developing television narration in front of a live audience and in tough news situations is not easy.

Yle is currently running a savings program. In her Facebook update, Marjo Rein hopes that her departure will save someone else’s permanent employment.
